Generally there are three options of a tooth replacement:
  • Full or Partial Dentures (removable)
  • Cemented (Fixed dental bridge)
  • Dental Implants

Today we will talk about Dental Implants!

Dental Implants were invented in 1952 by Dr. Per Ingvar Branemark. Dental Implants is a surgical treatment, where a fixture is placed in the jaw-bone to fuse with the bone over a period of few months. Thus, dental implant acts as a replacement of a root to a missing teeth. It helps in supporting the artificial tooth or a bridge. This implant sands alone, without affecting the surrounding teeth.

Getting dental implants depend on some of the following factors:
  • Location of the missing teeth
  • Jaw-bone quality
  • Patient’s health

A dentist consider and clinically examine the area of a potential implant.  There are great advantages of dental implants. Missing tooth or teeth can be replaced without affecting the adjacent teeth. They are natural looking teeth.

Oral surgeon and prosthodontist are well suited for this kind of job, as they always perform this kind of surgery. They perform surgery on both hard and soft tissues diseases and defects. There are two types of dental implants:
Endosteal and Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal Implants are no more in use because of its poor long-term diseases.

Dental mini implants are small and temporarily fit to the bone, which assist in anchorage for your tooth movement. After their purpose is achieved, the mini-implants are removed.

This surgery is usually performed under local anesthetic, so, no pain should be felt during the procedure. After the procedure, the discomfort is equal to that of a tooth extraction afterwards.  The surgeon will prescribe so some pain killers  curb any pain, if any.

Procedure:
The dental surgeon will usually examine the site of dental implants. The quality of jawbone is assessed. Once that is determined, the surgery is performed. First the damages tooth is removed. Then, an alveolar bone graft is placed to achieve a solid base of the bone for an implant. This site will be allowed to heal for two to six months. It all depends on the kind of jawbone structure you have. After the healing process, the dental implant is tested to determine whether the process is successful. After that is determined, a prosthetic component (abutment) is connected to the dental implant via a screw.  Abutment hold the crown or the replacement tooth. The dentist will take an impression of the abutment in the mouth and have the crown custom made to fit it.

Dental implants has become the most popular surgery now. To know more about dental implants, visit Sapphire Dental Centre in Milton now!
